The Right Energy Upgrade for Historic Buildings

May 19, 2021
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Online Meeting

In place of tabletops, the Boston Chapter is offering Zoom break-out rooms during the Social Hour (5:00 – 6:00 pm) between the monthly Board Meeting and the presentation. For $100.00, CSI Boston members will have 3-4 minutes to present to the attendees in the Zoom lobby and then approximately 30-40 minutes in a break-out room to speak with architects/specifiers who may have questions about your products. The number of vendors will be capped at 4 each month and rooms will be available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

SUSAN KNACK-BROWN is a Senior Principal at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. who specializes in large-scale preservation and adaptive reuse projects where she applies technology to the restoration of landmark buildings and works with owners to extend the function and performance of existing buildings.  Some of Susan’s signature projects include the multi-phase, multi-year roof rehabilitation and skylight restoration of the New York State Capitol, the roof replacement on the Massachusetts State House, and on-going work at The First Church of Christ, Scientist.

DESCRIPTION: Owners and designers often want to upgrade an historic building’s energy performance, but can struggle with what are the best choices with regards to invasiveness, long term performance, payback, etc.  Using common examples, this presentation examines the impact and effectiveness of a variety of upgrades.  Relatively simple interventions, such as installing window weatherstripping and sealing other air leakage paths, or expanding mechanical systems’ setpoints, can reduce energy consumption with little building fabric impact.  Other more extensive interventions, such as retrofitting wall or roof insulation, or installing new mechanical systems, may be needed depending on the building’s use or goals.
