RON KLEMENCIC is Chairman and C.E.O. of Magnusson Klemencic Associates, an award-winning, 225-person structural and civil engineering firm headquartered in Seattle, Washington, with a branch office in Chicago. He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University in 1985 and his M.S in Structural Engineering from the University of California Berkeley in 1986

DESCRIPTION: This program will showcase the Rainier Square development in Seattle, which includes a 1.4 million square-foot, 58-story, 850-foot tall mixed-use tower.  Bracing this tower against wind and seismic demands is a new structural system; a non-proprietary Concrete-Filled, Composite Plate Shear Wall (CF-CPSW) system, or as dubbed by AISC – Speed Core.

The innovative structure that features a lateral bracing system utilizing a sandwich of steel-plate panels tied together with steel rods and field-filled with concrete will be explained. Unlike a traditional concrete core, there is no rebar, and no formwork of any kind.  Erection of the tower began in October,2019 and was completed by August,2020 – only 10 months later resulting in a schedule savings of 10 months.
